Second Grade Performance Tonight

Second grade is very excited about our performance on Literacy Night. We can't wait for everyone to see us sing the songs for our musical "SQUIRM!" We hope everyone can come to Pontiac tonight. The show begins at 6:30.
We are looking forward to Literacy Night tonight.  The second grade will perform.  Teachers and students are in "Character" for the event dressing like a character in their favorite book.  We look forward to seeing you tonight from 6-8.

Jump Rope for Heart by Mrs. Ellis

Jump Rope For Heart was held on February 20th.  This annual service project allowed our Pontiac students  to strengthen their own hearts  while raising money to help fight our nation’s number one killer...heart disease.  Monetary donations may be made through cash, check, or through online donations.  Money will be collected now through March 11th.  All checks should be made payable to the American Heart Association.    To register to make online donations, go to the American Heart Association’s website:  www.heart.org/jump and click on register today.  Pontiac’s goal this year is $2,500.00.  A special thanks to our school music teacher, Lisa Rayner, who provided the music for
the students to listen to while jumping.  A good time was had by all! - Daleen Ellis, PE Teacher

Pontiac is a Green Steps school!

Our Green Steps projects are underway.   We are going strong with our recycling and energy patrol.  Our newest project, 'Trash Busters', is off to a great start.   We have collected and weighed 5 pounds of trash so far.  Our composting and gardening will be going strong once we get some warmer weather....stay tuned!
The PTO Sponsored Pontiac Daughter Dance "A Night to Shine" was precious.  You may view the  pictures from the dance on the following link:

Pontiac is 100 days smarter!

February 3 marked the 100th day of school for Pontiac students and, boy, did we celebrate! Students worked in all subject areas to display creative ways to make 100, study 100, and produce work worthy of 100 days of teaching and learning! Kindergarten classes created their own hundreds chart using numbers one through 100 hidden around the classroom and made necklaces with 100 beads by grouping beads into groups of ten. We had community members, who work in the community around us,  volunteer to come and read to the Pontiac Parrots. School wide, the students were treated to readers from a variety of occupations and professions coming to celebrate 100 days of learning through reading. Kindergarten and first grade students created bookmarks for all of the readers as a special thank you for coming to celebrate the special day with our students. Ask your child how they celebrated being 100 days smarter!

Second Grade Gingerbread Unit

Second Grade spent several weeks comparing and contrasting Gingerbread Men stories. We read stories from Hawaii, Cajun culture and others. We also read recipes and retold our own stories using the app Sock Puppets.

Thank You!

Mrs. Haltiwanger and our Reading Committee would like to thank everyone for making Pontiac's "100th" Day Reading Event a success.  Many students enjoyed listening to books read by various people who work in our community.  We are very fortunate to have so many great volunteers along with the best ever parents, students and teachers!
